How is the Workshop structured?

The day is divided into six steps that you will take toward lasting change:

Step 1 - Identify, enhance, and capture your motivation.
Learn how to use the excitement of the day to keep yourself motivated well into the future.

Step 2 - Understand the complex factors that cause excess weight.
The better you understand the physical, psychological, and social pressures that affect your weight, the easier it will be to control them. Dr. Wolfe and Dr. Ross bring to you decades of research and experience in the treatment of obesity. They will help you understand the forces that have made obesity epidemic in our time. More importantly, they will help you understand how those forces affect your life, and what you can do about them.

Step 3 - Learn how to manage the factors that make you overweight, and create a healthy-weight life.
This is the heart of the day. Some of what we discuss will be easy, like planning simple changes to your eating environment and brainstorming fun ideas for exercise. Other topics will be more demanding. We will explore the personal meanings that food holds for you, disentangle your social life from your food life, and develop strategies for coping with emotions without overeating. The catered luncheon we provide will form the basis for Hunger Awareness Training and the practice of mindful eating.

Step 4 - Analyze your lifestyle for the easiest way to integrate foundation behaviors that promote weight management success.
One reason your weight loss has always been temporary is that your strategies were chosen for promised quantity or speed of weight loss, and not necessarily for their fit with your life. As a result, you may well have been able to lose weight, but keeping it off was impossible because the loss was based on forcing a lifestyle that was not comfortable for you. Our detailed Lifestyle Analysis will help you identify changes that are comfortable for you. Changes that are comfortable are sustainable. If you sustain the changes, you will maintain your weight loss.

Step 5 - Evaluate weight loss programs for safety, sanity, and size.
There are thousands of weight loss strategies to pick from, and many of them are safe and effective. However, for any given program to work for you, it must also be sane and a good fit. It must meet your tastes for nutrition, as well as comfort and the amount of time, money, and energy you want to invest.
